There is a well-known saying that when one door closes, another one opens. Well, today marks the closing of my "college" door and the opening of my "real-life" door. Through everything that has happened today (commencement, speeches, graduation get-togethers, etc) I have come to realize that the figurative process of closing a door is an important one. At least for me, it has helped to put a definite and formal end to my years of classes and schooling.
In my feeble attempts at creating an analogy, I would have to say that graduation ceremony is like putting the icing on the cake. Cake is fine without the icing. It is still a cake and it still tastes good, but there is something missing--the icing. Well, college is my cake. A degree is a degree and is worth the same whether one attends graduation or not. However, the icing, or graduation ceremonies, finishes the cake. It is the closure. Once it's there, you know that the cake is really a cake.
I have come to realize that I need that closure. How can I look for a new open door if I don't know that the previous door has closed? Well, no worries. I can see it now, folks. The door to the future is gaping open because I just graduated!!!!
